چکیده

This poem was written for the University of Otago 2020 ‘Writer’ competition, and awarded first place (Staff Poetry category) by judge Dr. Sue Wootten. The responds to competition prompt ‘Only Connect…’, which is epigraph from E. M. Forster’s novel, Howards End (1910). Given this prompt, given timing (shortly after New Zealand’s major national COVID-19 lockdown), I aimed use poetic language metaphor evoke some themes my academic research around embodiment, affect, intimacy in digital spaces.The title refers Southern Cross Cable Network; commissioned 2000 become one trans-Pacific communications networks, connecting Aotearoa Zealand world, via a total 28,900km submarine 1,600km terrestrial fiber optic cables. final line words ever spoken on telephone, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell speaking his assistant Thomas Watson at distance 13 km.
